Temiskaming Shores, ON, December 2, 2014 – Temiskaming Hospital has been facing fiscal challenges for three years now. Without effecting change, we will have a shortfall of approximately $1.4 million this year. This is clearly not sustainable nor is it in alignment with the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care contract by which all 149 Ontario hospitals must balance within their Hospital Service Accountability Agreements with the Local Integration Health Network (NE LHIN).

To address this huge fiscal reality, the new CEO undertook a voluntary operational review of the entire Hospital. In June, the Hospital Board approved the recommendations flowing from the review. These recommendations are far reaching and will change the way we provide services. As a result, the Hospital is able to eliminate 15 full-time positions from a variety of areas, while continuing to provide the same quality and volume of clinical services.

In spite of the need for a reduction in our employee complement, we have implemented a thoughtful Human Resources Plan using:  transfers, voluntary exits, retirement packages and the elimination of vacant positions, without a single involuntary layoff.

While there may be some realignment of support services, there are no clinical service reductions to the citizens of Temiskaming Shores nor the patients and families of the Temiskaming district.

The Board, our physicians, volunteers, staff and our management team are committed to delivering quality care to our communities in a caring environment, which makes efficient use of its patient care funding
