As the Government of Ontario proceeds with its plan to lift remaining COVID-19 directives, hospitals will be adopting and implementing certain protective measures, including requirements related to personal protective equipment and health care worker vaccination, into their own health and safety policies and procedures.

“The role of hospitals in society is unique.” stated Mike Baker, President & Chief Executive Officer at Temiskaming Hospital. “We care for the most vulnerable people in our communities and at the same time care for those who are the most contagious, on an ongoing basis, not just with COVID-19.”

Infection prevention and control measures continue to be a vital component of strategies employed to keep all patients, staff, and professional staff safe. Vaccinations are another vital and effective measure of control, as well as the use of personal protective equipment. Combining these measures creates the safest possible environment for everyone.

COVID-19 still exists and will for some time and although there have been great gains in Southern Ontario, we have seen only modest gains in Northern Ontario. As well, hospital overcrowding has been something Temiskaming Hospital has been dealing with for several years and it has become a significant issue now across the province.

As of March 14, Temiskaming Hospital's occupancy stands at 120.3% for the month, a level not seen in its history. And 49.3% of the patients would be better served in care environments outside of the hospital, however, the health care system in our area does not have the capacity for these patients.

“As a result, hospitals across the province, including Temiskaming Hospital, will continue with strict visitor policies, vaccination requirements and appropriate personal protective equipment, including masks, for some time as vital measures to protect patients, the community, and our team at the hospital.” Mike Baker concluded.
