Laboratory Services
Laboratory Services is responsible for providing timely and accurate results efficiently and effectively in order to support the physicians and other paramedical disciplines in the delivery of the best possible patient care. Diagnostic tests are provided in the individual areas of hematology (blood and blood disorders), urinalysis, biochemistry (heart, liver, kidney and other organs, fats, electrolytes, proteins and glucose), serology (mono testing), histology (tissue and body fluids), microbiology (bacteria, yeast, virus), and transfusion medicine (blood for transfusion). Temiskaming Hospital is linked in partnership with Health Sciences North for the delivery of Microbiology and Pathology services for the community.
Services are provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. On business days the laboratory is staffed from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm. On weekends and holidays staffing is more limited and/or covered by a technologist on call. Staffing includes Medical Laboratory Technologists, Medical Laboratory Technicians and a Laboratory Supervisor.
Outpatients services are provided to all Quebec residents and Ontario residents who are having blood testing done in connection with further hospital services (ex) oncology). The general population of Ontario residents have outpatient services provided by Life Labs.
For those who qualify for outpatient services an appointment can be made by calling the lab at 705-647-1088 x2281.
Hematology, biochemistry, transfusion medicine and urinalysis results are normally available the same day that they are collected.
Microbiology and Pathology samples are referred to Health Sciences North for testing and result turn-around-times vary by specimen type and can take days or weeks to be completed.
