Temiskaming Hospital is an acute care community hospital and not defined as a small hospital by the NE LHIN. Therefore we are not eligible for the 1% funding increase.
Temiskaming Shores, ON, July 21, 2015 – Temiskaming Hospital has been facing fiscal challenges for three years now. Without effecting change, the hospital would have a shortfall of approximately $1.4 million in 2015/16. Since this was clearly not sustainable nor in alignment with our commitment to the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care contract by which all 149 Ontario hospitals must balance, we took action.
I am pleased to say that given our undertaking of a voluntary operational review of the entire Hospital from boardroom to patient room and subsequent reviews of our business practices, the hospital is in a favourable position this fiscal.
In spite of the need for a reduction in our employee complement, we have fully implemented a thoughtful Human Resources Plan without a single involuntary layoff.
Further, there are no clinical service reductions to the residents of the Temiskaming district and its communities.
However, Temiskaming Hospital does not receive the small and rural hospital 1% annual funding increase because it is classified as an acute care community hospital in the NE LHIN. Nevertheless, we are pleased the Minister has provided for our small and rural hospital partners, as this additional increase stabilizes services to Ontarians.
