According to the Canadian Lung Association, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. In 80-90% of cases, it is caused by smoking. It is characterized by progressive partially reversible airway obstruction, systemic manifestations, and increasing frequency and severity of exacerbations..  For people with COPD, flare ups or exacerbations can be brought on by something as simple as a common cold, weather change or poor air quality.  Often these flare ups can result in emergency room visits.

To date, Temiskaming Hospital has tripled the number of residents being tested for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).  Early recognition, encouraging smoking cessation and promoting self-awareness through a treatment plan, are ways the hospital, in collaboration with our community partners, is working toward managing this chronic lung disease.

At Temiskaming Hospital doctors, nurses, and the Respiratory Therapist work together to provide best practice care to rescue our patients in the detection and treatment of COPD.  Goals to lessen shortness of breath, decrease inflammation and treat infection while providing support of the breathing muscles is accomplished until our patient’s status can deliver adequate lungful respirations.

World COPD day on November 18th 2015 was recognized within our facility this year as staff was provided the opportunity to have spirometry completed on themselves to better understand what this test includes.  Staff also participated in an OTN Provider Education Program COPD live stream with Dr. Tony D’Urzo.  After the presentation staff welcomed insight from a certified yoga instructor in regards to the creation of appropriate better breathing exercises as well as relaxation techniques for our COPD clients while recovering in hospital.
