In December of 2020, Temiskaming Hospital was designated as a level 1 Choosing Wisely Canada Hospital. This designation is given to hospitals working to combat unnecessary testing and treatment resulting in safer and higher quality care for patients and the health care system. Temiskaming Hospital is one of 18 Canadian hospitals and one of 13 Ontario hospitals to receive a level 1 designation.

Unnecessary testing and treatment is a pervasive problem in health care and can result in increased patient wait times and potential adverse events. Choosing Wisely Canada’s designation recognizes the efforts made by our health care professionals improving services for Temiskaming Hospital and its patients.

“Temiskaming Hospital recognizes the importance of quality improvement initiatives to support evidence-based care delivery,” said Chief Nursing Executive and Director of Patient Care Erin Montgomery. She continued, “Supported by the hospital’s Quality and Patient Safety Council, Quality of Care Committee, Medical Advisory Committee and Quality and Service Planning Committee, Temiskaming Hospital committed towards achieving Choosing Wisely designation in 2020, and I would like to commend all of our team members for their efforts over this past year.”

There are three levels of Choosing Wisely Canada Hospital designations.

“As the program is a multiyear effort, following years will include additional initiatives with the goal of level 2 designation by March 31, 2022,” said Montgomery.

“The strength of our team at the Temiskaming Hospital is the way we work together to develop solutions,” said Temiskaming Hospital President & CEO Mike Baker. He continued, “In this case, physicians, clinical staff and administration worked together to ensure we achieved a nationally-recognized designation and directly improved patient care for our community.”
